How to Replace a Faulty Start Device in Your Maytag Refrigerator

A defective start device in your Maytag refrigerator model MSS26C6MFB can cause the compressor in your appliance to become non-functional, meaning your fridge will not get cool. When this occurs, you will often hear a humming or clicking noise at the back of your appliance as the compressor attempts to turn on every minute or so. Removing the faulty start device, and installing a new one is a quick and easy repair.

How to Replace the Start Device in Your Maytag Refrigerator

Before you start, unplug your refrigerator and turn-off the water running to the appliance. Wearing work gloves and safety goggles is also highly recommended.
  1. Pull your refrigerator away from the wall to gain access to the appliance’s back panel. Remove the water supply line from the inlet valve. Using a ¼ inch nut driver, remove all the screws holding the back panel in place. Slide out the power cord from the slot it sits in on the access panel. Now lift the panel off the back of the refrigerator.
  2. Locate the start device on the side of the compressor. Remove the retaining wire which holds the run capacitor in place. Then, unplug the run capacitor and put it somewhere safe.
  3. Using a flat head screwdriver, carefully pry the defective start device off of the compressor.
  4. Disconnect the wire plug from the start device by opening the tab on the plug with your flat head screwdriver.
  5. Now, plug the run capacitor and wires into your brand new start device.
  6. Firmly reinstall the start device onto the side of the compressor. Once the part is secure, reattach the retaining wire.
  7. Now it’s time to reinstall the back panel. To begin, slide the refrigerator’s plug back into the slot on the access panel. You should also make sure the water line is on the outside of your refrigerator before you insert the back panel screws. Once the back panel is secure, hook-up the water supply line.
  8. Finally, plug-in your refrigerator and turn the water supply back on.
